This introductory workshop will introduce the basic principles of copy cataloging through the lens of practical tips and guidance! We’ll start at the beginning — what copy cataloging is and how it happens, where information in a record comes from, what MARC is and how it works, the relationship between the subject heading and the call number, critical MARC fields (and what you should expect to see in those fields!), gotchas with MARC fields, and finally, tools for evaluating records, including cheatsheets and guidance for evaluating records.
For those new to cataloging or technical services work – don’t worry if you do not know MARC! We’ll go through it from its most basic level to what fields are important for copy cataloging.
For staff more experienced in copy cataloging, you’ll likely pick up some tips & tricks as well as some quick cheatsheets you can use!
