Free and Low-Cost Alternatives to Popular Software

There are many free software options available as alternatives to popular expensive software. We will examine the best software for libraries that are free to use for editing pictures, videos, and documents to productivity and makerspace resources, helping your library offer a full suite of tools for staff and users.

During this session, we will delve into the world of open source and freemium software (free light versions of fee-based software). We will also discuss each tool’s pros and cons and explore ideas on how to market and train everyone to get the most from these digital tools.

Bio

Diana Silveira is a librarian and President of Novare Library Services, where she works with libraries to develop, implement, and utilize technology effectively. Previously, she was employed by the Tampa Bay (FL) Library Consortium and the Charlotte Mecklenburg (NC) Library. She has an MLIS from UNC-Greensboro and a BS in psychology from Catawba College. Her book, Library Technology Planning for Today and Tomorrow, published by Rowman and Littlefield in 2018, is now available.
