Cataloging Basics: Things with Numbering

This fun and engaging workshop will focus on “things” with numbering! How do we handle resources that are part of something else? Should we start with the data or the resource itself, and what does each tell us? We all know what a magazine is but how do we “know” what a magazine is? What about other things with numbering? How do we decide what they are? What do we do when we find records that are in different formats for the same title?

What are our options when we have a “thing” that is part of something else, like novels that we often want to read in order, but the data we find or get from vendors doesn’t have any way to facilitate reading order? What if the data we find or get doesn’t fit with what our community needs are?

This workshop will explore characteristics of different types of formats including physical and data presentation, as well as tips for determining treatment (is it a book? is it a serial?). We’ll explore the coded world of serial authority records (not just for serials!) and how they can HELP you when finding conflicting information. We’ll also touch on series and how they can help you reign in the chaos of some publisher’s titles!

This webinar will be helpful for all staff who handle material, all technical services staff, and all staff interested or working in MARC records. No MARC experience is needed, but some familiarity with MARC records and/or bibliographic data will be useful.
