Automating Cataloging & Metadata Work

Automating is a way of life – how does that fit in with cataloging and metadata work? Where can we automate? Where should we automate? Where should we not?

We’ll explore some practical tools for automation: MARCEdit, OpenRefine, Google Sheets and even Excel (!), and AI to talk about how we can leverage technology. We’ll talk about “dirty data,” ideas for cleanup work, quality vs. quantity, value-added cataloging, and how system migrations uncover all sorts of data issues.

We’ll wrap up with a discussion of how data management impacts our end-users and why investing in data maintenance and cleanup now saves time and work later down the road (especially in preparation for a system migration!).
